Klukwan Veterans' Memorial

The monument at the Klukwan Veterans' Memorial was begun by the efforts of local Vietnam Veteran Donald Hotch Sr. in the late 1990's. Don, known locally as Bosh, had a local contractor create a cement monument that would hold a plaque with all the names of the local veterans, both living and deceased. The monument was made complete with an American Flag flying overhead. The monument, as originally created, sat in an open field where the Klukwan Post Office turned school building had been located before it had burned to the ground in the late 1980's. The monument got a face lift when the community received a small grant from the Alaska Department of Veterans and Military Affairs in 2002. Since then the community has been building up the area in an effort to honor the war veterans and to beautify the community. Fund raisers, donations, volunteer labor, and contributions from the local tribal government have all helped to make the Klukwan Veterans' Memorial what it is today.

This is a photo taken during the Memorial Day Celebration in May of 2006. In the photo L to R are Specialist Katrina Hotch - local National Guardsman and Soldier Medic, Lt. Walter Hotch-Hill, local National Guardsman who is currently deployed to Iraq, Terrie Pardee, retired National Guard Officer who presides over the Memorial services, and Ann Hansen, an Air Force Cadet who sounded the trumpet during the memorial service that year.
